BIOHari Sama

Mexican musician and filmmaker

He studied filmmaking at Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica, and music composition at the Musical Studies and Research Center. He is a keyboardist and clarinet player, and one of the lead singers from the experimental dark rock band EURIDICE.

He is a founding partner of the production company Catatonia Films. As an advertising film director, Hari is one of the most acclaimed directors in Mexico.

His short films have participated at some of the most important festivals in the world and received awards such as the Mayahuel for best short film at the Guadalajara International Film Festival in two separate occasions, the Audience Award at the Morelia International Film Festival, the award for Best Short Film at the Mexico Section in the Japanese Short Shorts Film Festival, the Special Jury Prize at the Biarritz Film Festival in France, the 2008 award for Best Latin American Short Film at the Cero Latitud Film Festival in Quito, Ecuador, and the Audience Award at the La Pedrera Short Film Festival in Montevideo, Uruguay.

His first feature film, SIN TON NI SONIA, was successfully presented at several national and international film festivals, including its European premiere at the San Sebastián Festival. It received the Audience Award at the Guadalajara Film Festival and had a significant run in Mexican cinemas.

THE DREAM OF LU, his second feature film, received the award for Best Actress at the Shanghai International Film Festival, the award for Best Actress at the 16th Malaga Film Festival, the award for Best Actress at the 55th Ariel Awards in 2013, a Special Commendation at the Morelia International Film Festival, and participated in dozens of renowned film festivals all around the world. It was selected as the opening film for the inauguration of the new Cineteca Nacional in Mexico City before a sizeable independent run in theatres.

His third feature film, AWAKENING DUST, won the Kukulkan Award for Best Film at the Riviera Maya Film Festival, the PCI Award for Best Film in the Independent Film Project category at the 2014 Tres Fronteras International Film Festival in Argentina, all within the international festival tour that continues to this day.
Hari is co-director and member of the Selection Committee at Foro EL BICHO, a space dedicated to the advancement, experimentation, creation, promotion, and livening of Mexican contemporary theater.

His current projects include the premiere of the feature documentary film SUNKA RAKY (EVANESCENT JOY), as well as the development of his next feature film: “Mustard Seeds.”
